• Baixa as temperaturas e ajuda a retenção de humidade no solo e no ar;
• Aumento da biodiversidade e refúgio para a vida silvestre;
• Produção de alimentos (florestas alimentares, agrosilvicultura dinâmica);
• Produção de madeira para artesanato, construção e energia;
• Regeneração de terras abandonadas;
• Melhoria estética e aumento do potencial de eco-turismo;
• Áreas gerenciadas por ONG;
• Capelas, caminhos de peregrinação e caminhos de pedestres (com árvores oferecendo sombra e frutas aos peregrinos);
• Áreas recentemente afetadas por incêndios;
• Áreas ecologicamente degradadas;
SUMMARY
Several individual persons with the common factor of constructive environmental activism for solutions at a local level in Idanha-a-Nova, are coming together to plant one million trees in the region, in order to help combat desertification (natural and human), the loss of biodiversity, carbon sequestration and climate change, to create a better environment for the region of Idanha-a-Nova, sensitize the population, as well as contribute to the global change of paradigms. In this motivation and motivation was created the association, One Million Trees
CONTEXT AND MOTIVATION
Portugal has been facing consecutive and regular droughts, with the forecast that they will be increasingly frequent. This scenario threatens the livelihoods of thousands of people, plants and animals and has contributed to the devastating fires that devastated the country, and this process has become a vicious circle that feeds itself. The dams are almost dry, rivers stop flowing and villages have to be supplied with water by trucks, as well as watering cattle and wildlife.
In Idanha-a-Nova, the Marechal Carmona dam was several times at a very low level and will also tend to dry up when a more serious or prolonged event occurs, as happened about thirty years ago. These social and environmental catastrophes are not isolated events, but part of a trend that, unchecked, will become commonplace.
Climate change and desertification, which affect us in one way or another, will become more acute in the future. This shows once again that people's well-being is heavily dependent on the environment and that we do great damage to the very environment that sustains us. However, we also have great power, knowledge and the means to change this trend for the better. Both the climate and the water cycle can be influenced at regional and local level and one of the key elements in this process are trees.
Different regions in richer and poorer countries have made successful reforestation projects with very positive results. With this initiative, Idanha will start a reforestation program that will improve environmental conditions, provide benefits to the population and inspire other people and regions to follow the same path.
Only a dense environment of trees / forests will change the climate for the better, with more rain, water retention, more shade and milder temperatures and with more biodiversity, as well as producing local resources and means, through wood, fruits, pastures, more fertile soil and many other resources derived from and provided by the autochthonous forest.
WHY TREES - DIRECT ADVANTAGES OF THE INITIATIVE
• CO2 capture.
• Forests can produce clouds and microclimates, which cool the region
• Soil protection and erosion prevention; Improvement of soil fertility through the production of organic matter
• Lowers temperatures and helps retain moisture in the soil and air;
• Increase in biodiversity and refuge for wildlife;
• Food production (food forests, dynamic agroforestry);
• Production of wood for crafts, construction and energy;
• Regeneration of abandoned land;
• Improved aesthetics and increased eco-tourism potential;
• Civic education, promotion of environmental responsibility and affective connection with the environment and the concept of happiness.
WHO AND WHERE
The initiative will be promoted by the Um Milhão de Árvores Association, which will create several partnerships that prove timely, coherent and efficient for the intended objectives. Local residents and landowners will be invited to participate voluntarily, either by committing part of their land to the reforestation (the former) or by participating in public sowing and planting activities. On the other hand, in the medium term, initiatives may be promoted to disseminate knowledge of wild resources, observation and knowledge of birds and wild fauna, native botany, leisure, cultural and historical heritage. Individuals, schools and other entities (eg associations, companies, etc.) will be invited to volunteer in tree planting and care activities, thus sharing the effort and raising awareness of the program. School teachers are invited to motivate and support their students in the production of plants in schools, to be planted and monitored by children.
Preliminary suggested areas for reforestation are:
• Private properties adhering to the initiative (becoming members of One Million Trees)
• Areas managed by NGOs;
• Chapels, pilgrimage paths and footpaths (with trees providing shade and fruit to pilgrims);
• Municipal roads, creating strips of native vegetation that absorb carbon in situ, protect from visual impact and noise and provide shade in a region where the road can be easily reached.
•Areas recently affected by fire;
• Ecologically degraded areas;
• Conversion of eucalyptus plantations to forests with greater biodiversity.
WHICH TREES
We will plant native trees that are adapted to survive with little water and that can normally be found in our region: Holm oak (Quercus ilex), Cork oak (Quercus suber), Oaks from the region ( Quercus faginea, Quercus pyrenaica, Quercus coccifera), Zambujeiro ( Olea europaea), Arbutus (Arbutus unedo), Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), Stone pine (Pinus pinea), Pereira brava (Pyrus communis), Sanguinho (Rhamnus alaternus), Aroeira (Pistacia terebinthus), Cornlheira (Pistacia lentiscus), etc. Also fruit trees (traditional or native varieties) can be planted in valleys where there is more water available, such as pear, apple, pomegranate, almond, fig, etc. Willow (Salix ssp.), Ash (Fraxinus angustifolia), Mulberry (Morus alba and nigra), Hazel (Corylus sp.), Chestnut (Castanea sativa), Walnut (Juglans regia), Alder (Alnus glutinosa) and other autochthonous species deemed appropriate. Shrubs such as Cytisus sp and Retama sp will also be planted as pioneers in areas with highly degraded or recently burned soils. The objective is also to create botanical, faunal and even human biodiversity.
